HEAD Skis

By Martin Olson
Head Skis
2010 Collection Skis

When it comes to technology, nobody takes it more seriously than Head. They have already introduced Intelligence Technology, a piezoelectric feedback system that modulates torsion on the fly, and super-specialized materials such as Liquidmetal, a special amorphous metal that returns almost all the energy put into it. Wide use of wood cores and proper application of the most advanced materials and construction technology has yielded another line of skis for 09/10 that do all that that can be expected and much more.

RACE ... direct descendants of the World Cup spec skis the champions ride.

CHIP

Warning, Techno-geek Content! - A few years back Head introduced a technology that used piezoelectric fibers embedded at 45° in front of the binding. Piezoelectric fibers convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. As the ski twists, the fibers are bent causing them to produce electrical energy that is then looped back to the fibers causing them to stiffen thereby putting more rebound and torsional grip into the ski. So…as demand increases, the fibers’ response increases to create a ski that is adjusting to the situation on the fly. The fibers are called “Intellifibers” and when this system is used in the ski it is said to have “Intelligence Technology.”

To make this concept even more effective Head engineers insert a chip in the circuit so the electrical energy is not just recycled, it is accumulated and released strategically to match the oscillation properties of the ski — a bit like a noise-canceling headset. This effectively multiplies the torsion-control, making it even more powerful. Skis with this technology installed have “Intelligence CHIP Technology.”

Titanium stiffeners in tip and tail as well as a construction method that brings the top sheet down to touch the edges is part of the promise to take frontside carving up a notch. The other part is Intelligence CHIP Technology, Liquidmetal and Worldcup sandwich construction.

ICON ... All-Mountain Piste

Icon TT (Torque Technology) rounds out the new lineup with 5 models for frontside cruising and carving. Icon is not a race line but construction of the top model (Icon TT 80.0) includes the most exotic technologies and race pedigree sandwich construction.

Torque Technology is a less complicated way to control torsion than CHIP technology. It’s also not adjustable but each ski model has Intelligence Technology as well as TT that is tailored to optimize performance. Icon has all the earmarks of a line that will serve a wide range of abilities.

PEAK ... All-Mountain Freeride

The well-known Monster line of all mountain skis has been retired. Peak is Monster’s successor for all terrain blasting in the mid-fat range. Monster set the pace in that segment but Monster fans won’t be disappointed by the new lineup. A new line doesn’t discard the successes and lessons learned along the way so enthusiasts can expect the same all-terrain stability and competence that made Monster the gold standard of the day. All models except Peak 76 use Intelligence Technology (torsion control on the fly) and the super-springy material Liquidmetal. As you might expect these skis tend to have less shape and more length than most categories.

Most brands have slightly different offerings of models depending on the market. This category is a typical example where Peak Ltd. is a unique ski for North America and Peak 6 is the Peak 76 with North American graphics.

PARK & PIPE

Park and pipe skis are all twin tips and they differ from other skis mainly in that they are built to take more punishment than other skis. Hard landings and park features that are often made of metal require tough skis. Bindings are also usually mounted more forward than most skis. Ski width and sidecut aren’t too important in this segment but are given for reference.
