What is Recco?
Imagine a tiny device that doesn’t need batteries or any kind of maintenance yet allows rescuers to pinpoint location accurately in the event of an avalanche. Recco is exactly that.
The actual component is a small electronic transponder similar to a thin printed circuit board with a copper aerial and a diode. It’s encased in weatherproof plastic and mounted on outdoor gear by the manufacturer.
Mounting is secure enough to prevent it being torn off in the violence of an avalanche. Rescuers then use an instrument that sends out a directional radar signal that is bounced back in such a way that it defines a direct path to the burial.
Recco is found in boots, helmets, packs and clothing for winter outdoors enthusiasts.
